Endless Walls is coming to Android and soon.  Development is nearing an end for the initial release and heavy testing will follow.  The Android version of Endless Walls includes most of the features from the iPhone app, but also adds new ones.

Endless Walls is a wallpaper sharing application.  It makes it easy to find new wallpaper and share your own with the rest of the users.  The iPhone version was a top 10 paid application in  the iTunes App Store last year.

Endless Walls Android 1.0 app comes with the following features (more to follow):

  1. Sharing – Send wallpapers by MMS or Email and submit your own to us
  2. Explore By – Random, Most Popular, Most Recent, and Your Favorites
  3. Save – Like the wallpaper? Save it
  4. Favorite – Like it but don’t want to save it? Favorite it
  5. Set Scaling – Alter the way wallpapers dispaly through Endless Walls
  6. Set Delay – Alter the delay between showing the next wallpaper
  7. Categories – Filter by categories what wallpapers you see
  8. Who’s On – See other users using the app
  9. Sources – Change between seeing 640×480 wallpapers and iPhone size at 320×480

One feature that hasn’t made it’s way in yet that we’re sure some users will miss is the ability to swipe the screen to go backwards or forwards.  Since Android wallpapers are larger in filesize we’re still working out how we want to implement the caching of them.  This feature will make its way into the app in the near future.

Time for the screenshots!

Apple has once again shown how screwed up the review process is.  In our latest update submitted to them we got a phone call from the reviewer claiming the app is violating their terms.

Endless Walls is wallpaper sharing application.  It works just like Flickr in terms of sharing.  Users agree to terms when they create their account and are responsible for having legal rights to upload images that they upload.  These are the basic terms of any image sharing site.  It’s pretty common knowledge.

Apple had several complaints this time (unlike when they pulled it last year):

  1. Apple says we need to submit to them documents showing that we have legal rights to display wallpapers through the Endless Walls iPhone App.  They say they require it for every image.  The Apple employee also claimed that it doesn’t matter to them that users agree to and agreement stating that they have the legal right to distribute the wallpapers that they upload, that Apple still requires its own proof from each copyright holder.  When I mentioned the Flickr app and a few other wallpaper apps, he said that would have to be looked into (yeah, right).
  2. His other complaint was the suggestive nudity.  He claims that it’s in violation of their rules.  When I mentioned to him one of the top 10 apps “iPasties”, he said “we’re not talking about other apps, we’re talking about your app”.  He refused to explain why it’s permitted by other applications, but not Endless Walls, which already required the customer to be 17 years old or older to download.

So once again, Endless Walls was in the iTunes App Store for more than a month and then removed.

If you’d like to complain to Apple about this, here’s their email address: appreview@apple.com.

Endless Walls (the Web site) provides an iPhone, iPod Touch, Palm Pre, and 1920×1200 Widescreen Desktop wallpaper sharing service. We’ve now extended the filtering capabilities like crazy.

Previously you could view the most popular, most recent, top favorites, but you couldn’t filter them by keyword, such as “car”. Now you can!

Just about all search types can be filtered and sorted. Not only does this include the above mentioned search types, but it also applies to user uploads and user favorites. So, if I’m browsing through my hundreds of favorite wallpapers, I can now search through them by keyword. Or if I’m browsing through another users uploads I can also search through them by keyword.

And what good is trying to explain this without a screenshot? Here’s one…

Each section has its own setting.  If I’m viewing all wallpapers, I can choose between All, Newest, Most Viewed, and Top Favorites, in addition to categories and searching within them.  We hope this will improve your wallpaper searching experience.

12.02

2.02 is nearly ready for submission to the iTunes App Store.  2.01 brought categories back, the ability to add wallpapers you like to your favorites, and an updated UI to make room for new features.  2.02 is the beginning of the new features!

In this next update you can choose which modes to display wallpapers from.  There are currently four all together:

  1. Categories (the current default mode)
  2. Most Popular
  3. Most Recent
  4. Your Favorites

While in Categories, Most Popular, or Most Recent, Endless Walls will filter the wallpapers by which categories you have selected. While in Your Favorites mode, you’ll see all of your favorite wallpapers regardless of which category they are in.

A long, long time ago we had a lot requests to allow users to swipe to go to the next image rather than waiting on the slideshow to change it.  Well, it’s added!  When slideshow is paused you can swipe the screen from right to left to load the next image.  Better late than never, right?

Version 2.02 includes one additional update, previewing images that you upload.  After the upload completes you’re presented with a screen that allows you to see what the uploaded image looks like and gives you the ability to provide a title for it or delete it.  While we allow virtually any image dimensions, the preview is displayed as if it were a 320×480 iPhone wallpaper.  The original full-size image is safely stored on our server and can be seen by going to EndlessWalls.com.  If there’s enough requests we’ll probably alter the thumbnail displayed to the actual images dimensions.

Update:

Version 2.02 has now been submitted to Apple.  A couple other new features were added since this blog post:

  • Shaking the device now toggles autohiding of the status bar and toolbar on/off.
  • While in full-screen mode (status bar and toolbar set to autohide), swiping between wallpapers no longer causes the status bar and toolbar to display.  Tap the screen to see them.

With the return of the Endless Walls iPhone App (App Store Link), the Endless Walls Web site was created.  It was created to provide a much richer user experience.  A lot of new features have been added since its initial release and this post has been created to summarize them.

The initial release of the Web site provided the following functionality:

1. Unlimited Uploads — upload as many wallpapers as you like
2. Private Uploads — you can keep images private if you like
3. Mature Content Allowed – nudity and images not safe for viewing at work are allowed
4. Tagging – this powers the search functionality
5. Comments – like a wallpaper? why not let the uploader know
6. Browse – browse other users uploads, most popular images, and more

Since then, the following features have been added:

1. Additional Browsing – browse most favored wallpapers
2. User Profiles – displays any personal info you wish to share as well as your uploads & favorites
3. RSS Feeds – provides a feed of the newest wallpapers
4. Galleries – Users can create galleries of wallpapers
5. Desktop Wallpapers – Users can submit 1920×1200 sized desktop wallpapers
6. Categories – Provides categorization for easy browsing
7. Twitter Integration – Wallpaper comments can also be Twittered

There’s also been a lot of UI changes and layout changes.

More new features are planned and many will work their way into the iPhone App!

Check out Endless Walls Web Site.

With Endless Walls back in the iTunes App Store we’re now working on new features to improve the user experience.  While working to maintain a simple interface, we’ve made some UI changes.  Endless Walls is a slideshow app so we’re trying to avoid looking like every other image browsing app out there with the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and buttons at the top of the screen.

Below are a few screenshots of the new UI.  You’ll notice a “Mode” status.  Since we’re intending to bring viewing of your favorites, the most popular wallpapers, and most recent wallpapers, the Mode will be used to change and display the mode the app is running in.  In this next update, it will always stay in “Cat” mode, which means Category, since the other modes haven’t been implemented yet.

You may also notice that we’re referring to 2.01 again.  We decided to reject the pending 2.01 and push the latest changes as 2.01 rather than waiting for 2.01 to be approved and then submitting 2.02.  Unfortunately, this will likely extend the wait time.

With the return of Endless Walls to the iTunes App Store we’re now working on updates to add even more functionality.  This is a preview of version 2.02, which will be submitted to Apple soon.

2.01 brought categories back to Endless Walls.  Categories allow filtering of wallpapers by choosing the categories you wish to view wallpapers from.  You can choose as many categories as you like.  All categories are selected by default.

2.02 brings favorites.  Favorites makes it easy to keep track of which wallpapers you liked, even if you don’t want to save them to your phone.  You can add as many wallpapers as you like to your favorites and can view them at any time by going to EndlessWalls.com.  In a future update, favorites will be viewable through the app as well.

Everyone loves pictures, so here are a few with the interface updates:
